What is Music?

A Community-Inspired
Art Series

When Coligan asked the community What is music? the responses were expansive, poetic, and deeply felt. This print series transforms those reflections into visual art—each piece rooted in a real response and offering a glimpse into how we experience music in ways that move beyond sound and into emotion, memory, identity, motion, escape, and connection.

Created from more than 100 crowd-sourced answers, this is an ever-growing archive of the ways music moves us. New prints will be released over time as the conversation—and the interpretations—continue to grow.

2020 SERIES & BOOK

pizza. patience. and all things love.

What is love?  Coligan asked her community this question and gathered 500+ responses from ages 6 to 83. Those voices inspired every poem and print in this series — real moments, memories, and emotions transformed into visual art and words.

The book even became a #1 Hot New Release on Amazon for a day — right beside Shakespeare — a surreal reminder of how universal and timeless this topic is.

Her hope is that these pieces spark connection, conversation, and a deeper appreciation for the many ways love shows up in our lives.

2019 SERIES

Windows of Opportunity:

shouldn’ts, couldn’ts + can'ts”

Exploring themes of social hierarchy, self-worth, and being “othered." — the exhibit depicts human triumph and suffering through a monochromatic motif across multiple mediums. By bringing a visual voice to emotions through the lens of “opportunity”— Coligan aims to facilitate conversations around diversity, tolerance and mutual respect.

2018 SERIES

Loosely Defined

The Loosely Defined series (14 original designs) is inspired by interviews Coligan conducted with 14 women across varying life experiences, ages, gender identities, professions, religions, sexualities, ethnicities, and upbringings.

Allowing for the nuances of the stories themselves to shape the direction of the work, Coligan discovered common human-first themes despite the many differences among the interviewees. By seeking out the stories of those in her community, and bringing a visual voice to their emotions, she hopes to facilitate the conversation around the importance of diversity, tolerance and mutual respect.
